Ohio State’s defense is hitting its stride at the perfect time, with the Buckeyes shutting down run games and relying on rising stars like Jaylen McClain and Eddrick Houston. The defensive line and linebackers turned early-season concerns into momentum, anchored by improved performances after the Illinois game and a resurgent Qua Russaw.
Jermaine Mathews and Devin Sanchez have been invaluable at cornerback, hold up on islands and allowing the aggressive play-calling required to get pressure. With a backup quarterback now at the helm, Ohio State’s season could hinge on the ability to lean into this tough, well-balanced defense. Special teams remain a work-in-progress, but signs of improvement suggest they may not be a liability as the Buckeyes’ championship push heats up.
