Ohio State Buckeyes fans face a reality check as defensive weaknesses surface against Illinois, with explosive plays and communication breakdowns sparking concern. The defensive line earns a C for consistent struggle to generate pressure, while youthful linebackers like Riley Pettijohn flash playmaking ability but suffer from costly lapses.
Secondary standouts include Jaylen McClain, who broke up four passes and led the team in tackles, but crucial miscommunications and penalties from cornerbacks like Devin Sanchez highlight lingering issues. Despite holding strong in man-to-man coverage against a potent passing attack, Ohio State’s defense concedes 19 points and several explosive plays, prompting questions on whether this unit can rise to elite status. Will expectations need to shift for the Buckeyes?
